What is a Precinct Committeeman?
To achieve our vision for “a stronger, freer America”
Every voter in Illinois resides in a precinct. There are over 10,000 precincts in the State of Illinois in 102 counties. In each precinct, ward or township, voters are entitled to elect a Committeeman to represent them in the Republican Party. Precinct Committeemen are elected to a two-year term in general primary elections in even-numbered years. This is a volunteer position.
A Republican Precinct Committeeman represents the GOP voters of his or her precinct at the County Republican Party level.
In every Illinois county, 29 days after the primary, the elected Precinct Committeemen (or Ward and Township Committeemen in Cook County) meet at the County Convention. The first major task of the County Convention is to elect (or re-elect) a County Chairman to lead the county party for the next two years.
